Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Communications Director for the 2024 Bawumia campaign, has defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in the energy sector, insisting that Ghanaians experienced only eight weeks of power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” under the party’s administration.
Speaking in an interview, Aboagye compared the NPP’s handling of power challenges to that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by President John Mahama.
He argued that while the NPP swiftly addressed its short-lived power crisis, the current government has shown no urgency in resolving ongoing outages.
“For the past two months, there have been series of dumsor, but there is no urgency on the part of the government. For us, we experienced only eight weeks of dumsor in our entire eight years, and the urgency with which we resolved it was evident,” he stated.
He further asserted that the NDC is not as committed to resolving the crisis, claiming that the term “dumsor” became widely known during Mahama’s presidency.
The comments come at a time when residents in the Ashanti Region and other parts of Ghana have been facing erratic power supply.
However, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has attributed the situation to increased electricity demand in the Kumasi enclave.
According to him, efforts are being made to stabilize supply through infrastructure upgrades, including replacing a 66 MVA transformer with a more powerful 145 MVA unit.
Jinapor reassured Ghanaians that the country is currently generating enough electricity, even exporting surplus power, but stressed that improvements in transmission and distribution remain a priority to ensure reliable energy supply.
