A section of Ghanaians are calling for a detailed explanation from former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah as to why she was keeping such an amount of money in her home.

“If this amount of money could be stolen from her house, then I wonder what she has in her bank account”, a citizen said.

Following the revelations of two househelps stealing an estimated amount of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana cedis from the minister’s home, Ghanaians are of the view that leaders should not be trusted, adding that they are part of the country’s problems.

“If you travel abroad, leaders ride bicycles to work, but that is not the case in Ghana. Most of our leaders want to be rich in power. They want to buy the V8s and feel comfortable”

A market woman who spoke to the news team is of the view that, if such an amount were kept in the bank for investment purposes, the economy would not be in the mess it is in today.

“Other politicians may be keeping huge amounts of money in their homes and this does not help the money in circulation. If she had kept it in the bank, it would have gone a long way to help the economy in terms of inflation.”

Expressing their frustration on the matter, Ghanaians want the former minister to be jailed to serve as a deterrent to other ministers who are keeping huge sums of money at home or intend to.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned as the minister of sanitation and water resources, has been arrested by the Special Prosecutor and is assisting with investigations.

According to reports, part of the money is from funeral donations and other business transactions.

The two housekeepers, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), are also standing trial before an Accra Circuit Court for their alleged involvement in the theft.

It is alleged that the theft occurred between July and October 2022.

The house helps, and their accomplices are to reappear in court on August 2, 2023.
