Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has described Ghana’s qualification to the 2006 World Cup in Germany as his greatest achievement ever as GFA president.
According to Mr. Nyantakyi, he would give himself 10 out of 10 for the achievement of the team in Germany.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, he said his top priority when he assumed office as the GFA president was to get Ghana to qualify for the World Cup.
“When I came in 2005, I introduced a strategic plan into football for the first time and I set targets and time frame to achieve them. One was, qualify to for the 2006 World Cup and when you go, your worst performance should be a qualification to the second round so I will give myself 10 over 10 for doing that,” he stated.
He explained that though Ghana had some great players in the past, they could not secure qualification for the World Cup.
“At that time, when Ghana qualified to the second round, we were the only country from Africa, Asia, North and Central America. Ghana had never qualified to the World Cup. We read about Aggrey Fynn, Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum, Baba Yara, and more recently in 1992, we had top players like Frimpong Manso, Emmanuel Ampiah, Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Prince Polley, among others, and yet we couldn’t qualify,” he added.
