The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended more than 600 undocumented migrants during a coordinated early morning operation in parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The exercise, carried out on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, followed growing public concern over the increasing presence of foreign beggars and its impact on sanitation and public order.
The operation, led by the Ashanti Regional Commander of GIS, Fred Amankwa, began at 3:30 a.m. and ended at 5:00 a.m., covering areas including Asawase, Alabar, Akwatia Line, Dagomba Line, Sabon Zongo, and Aboabo.
In total, 606 individuals were picked up during the swoop. Officials reported that the group comprised 381 children, 72 females, and 153 males.
According to GIS, the operation formed part of efforts to address concerns raised by residents about nuisance and deteriorating sanitary conditions linked to street begging activities in the metropolis.
All those apprehended have since been transported to Accra for further screening to establish their identities and determine the next course of action.
Authorities say the exercise is part of ongoing measures to enforce immigration regulations and maintain public order.
