Give young players in the team a chance to play – Kwesi Nyantakyi to Chris Hughton

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has urged Black Stars coach Chris Hughton to give young players in the Black Stars squad a chance to play.

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has urged Black Stars coach Chris Hughton to give young players in the Black Stars squad a chance to play.

Mr. Nyantakyi made this call during his interview with Starr Fm on Thursday evening.

According to him, selecting a team should be based on merit and not on the grounds of seniority.

“Youth football is our competitive advantage and so it behooves us to pay more attention there. I think Milovan Rajevac got it right when he decided to recruit eight players from the 2009 U-20 team into the 2010 AFCON and World Cup team and that made the difference. I challenge this coach, if he can bring young boys, we would do better so selection should be based on merit and not names. If I had my way, those young boys in the team who can run, I will give them the chance,” he said.

Ghana is currently in Ivory Coast for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will begin on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

The Black Stars is in Group B with Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique with their first group match to take place on Sunday against Cape Verde.
