The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern three-day ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Police Service to prosecute a student who stabbed a teacher in the left eye at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso.
In an exclusive interview with 3news’ Daniel Opoku, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah Tanko expressed deep frustration at the lack of action by authorities and warned of a potential strike by teachers if the matter is not addressed swiftly.
The incident occurred on November 8 when the teacher reportedly asked a loitering student to return to the classroom. The student retaliated by stabbing the teacher in the left eye, causing the teacher to permanently lose sight in that eye.
Mr. Tanko lamented the silence from GES and the Police Service, stressing the long-term impact on the injured teacher.
“The teacher has lost his left eye, meaning that for the rest of his life, he will be going through life with only one eye. His medical bills and all those things, who will take care of it?” he asked.
The visibly angered General Secretary hinted at industrial action, stating, “That’s why we are by this medium telling the duty bearers the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service that if by next week we do not hear anything positive, we will decide the next line of action.”
GNAT’s ultimatum comes as calls grow for swift justice and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and protection of teachers nationwide.
The association has warned that failure to act could trigger widespread disruptions in the education sector as teachers may withdraw their services in protest.
The victim, now adjusting to life with one eye, continues to bear the physical and emotional toll of the attack, raising questions about accountability and support for educators in Ghana.
