The National Officers’ Elections of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), slated for January 7, 2026, have been suspended after a court granted an interlocutory injunction following a legal challenge by a presidential aspirant.
The action was initiated by Charles Kwabena Amponsah, a teacher at Asare Bediako Senior High School, who is contesting the GNAT National Presidency.
He petitioned the court, raising concerns about alleged breaches of the Association’s constitution, procedural irregularities, and the credibility of the delegates’ register intended for the elections.
In his suit, Mr. Amponsah argued that aspects of GNAT’s regional leadership structure were improperly constituted, claiming that some district conferences, including the 2025 Adansi West District Conference, were conducted in ways that contravened constitutional provisions governing the election of delegates.
He further alleged that delegates who took part in the Ashanti Regional Conference, as well as those expected to attend the National Conference, were not duly elected by their respective districts but were instead selected by regional executives.
According to the plaintiff, this process allegedly favoured certain candidates and compromised the fairness of the electoral contest.
He specifically questioned the role of the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Prosper Tachie, also a presidential aspirant, suggesting that the circumstances created an uneven playing field.
Mr. Amponsah also raised issues with the conduct of the GNAT Elections Committee, alleging procedural lapses that, in his view, undermine the transparency and integrity of the entire electoral process.
On the basis of these claims, the court granted the injunction, restraining GNAT from proceeding with the national elections until the substantive matters are determined.
The case has been adjourned to January 15, 2026, for further hearing.
Court records show that the writ was served on GNAT at its National Headquarters on December 29, 2025, through an officer of the registry.

However, several other defendants, including the National President, Rev. Isaac Owusu, Thomas Musah (General Secretary), General Secretary, and Mr. Mahmoud Issah Zakary Chairman of the Elections Committee, were not present at the time service was effected.
The injunction has generated widespread interest within the teaching community, as members and stakeholders await the court’s ruling on issues that could have significant implications for GNAT’s governance and future electoral processes.
