Ghana’s National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports to revive the defunct Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) games.
Following their joint annual International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) games, GNFS officers in the Central and Western Regional Fire Commands hinted that the Sports Ministry could use their games as a basis to reinstate the SESSA games.
The defunct SESSA games once helped to unearth enough sporting talent in the country through inter-services competition, resulting in excellent performances on Ghana’s respective national teams at the national and international levels.
The service made an appeal last Friday when it held the second edition of its IFFD games, in which the Central Regional Fire Command, the Takoradi Ports and Harbour Fire Service Department, and the Western Regional Fire Command competed in a variety of sporting activities at Cape Coast’s Adisadel College Park.
ACFOl Frederick Ohemeng, Western Regional Commander of the GNFS, pleaded with the media about the need for the Sports Ministry to help revive the SESSA games through the Central and Western Regional Fire Command’s organised IFFD games, allowing the security services to recruit more sporting talent.
He once again urged well-meaning organisations to assist the Fire Commands in their organisation and determination to expand the IFFD games throughout the country.
ADOl Mahama Zangina, Head Coach of the Central Regional GNFS Volleyball Team, also made a humble request to the Minister of Sports to assist the leadership of the country’s security services in reviving the SESSA games to help emerging sporting talents in the country.
In his welcome address, ACFOl John Amarlai Amartey, the Central Regional Commander for the GNFS, stated that this year’s edition of the IFFD games had improved due to the introduction of other sporting games such as sack race, spoon and lime, tag of peace, and penalty shootouts by various commanders, in addition to the volleyball and football games competed in last year.
