The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has crowned its week-long celebration of International Firefighters’ Day with the launch of a dedicated Health and Safety Fund—a bold step aimed at providing vital support for firefighters injured in the line of duty and assisting the families of those who make the ultimate sacrifice.

The fund was officially unveiled at a climactic ceremony in Accra under the theme, “Appreciating Our Heroes: Say No to Firefighter Assault and Firefighting Truck Vandalism.” This year’s observance honored the unwavering courage and dedication of Ghana’s firefighters, who risk their lives daily to safeguard lives, property, and the environment.

In a stirring keynote address, Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, underscored the challenges confronting the Service—ranging from outdated equipment to resource constraints—and pledged the government’s continued commitment to modernizing the GNFS.

He issued a strong condemnation of attacks on personnel and damage to firefighting equipment, urging community leaders, faith-based organizations, and civil society groups to speak out against such harmful acts.

“Respect for firefighters is non-negotiable. Their lives matter. Their work is indispensable,” the Minister emphasized.

Hon. Muntaka also called for sustained public and institutional support for the new fund, urging stakeholders to contribute annually to ensure it remains robust and impactful.

Acting Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Daniella Ntow Sapong, reflected on the sacrifices made by firefighters and the operational hurdles they face. While acknowledging the Service’s resource limitations, she celebrated their continued commitment to duty and their growing record of achievements.

“This fund is a game-changer. It speaks not only to welfare but to the value we place on human life and service,” she stated.

In an emotional tribute, Ag. CFO Ntow Sapong extended appreciation to the Interior Minister for his unwavering support and reaffirmed the GNFS’s resolve to uphold professionalism, resilience, and compassion.

The climax of the event included a moving tribute to fallen heroes and a call for national cooperation.

“Today, we honor those who paid the ultimate price,” she said. “May their bravery inspire us all to serve with honor.”

The event concluded with the presentation of awards to distinguished firefighters, capping a powerful week of reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment to public safety.
