The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has taken two significant steps forward in its mission to safeguard lives, property, and the environment.
With the launch of a transformative Seven-Year Strategic Plan and Scheme of Service, as well as receiving a prestigious Presidential Honour, the GNFS has solidified its position as a critical institution in Ghana’s development.
The launch of the Strategic Plan, held in Accra, marks a pivotal moment in the GNFS’s 61-year history.
Spanning 2024 to 2030, the plan outlines a comprehensive roadmap for modernizing the Service.
It prioritizes the upgrading of equipment, improving operational efficiency, and expanding fire safety initiatives nationwide.
Central to the plan are continuous training for firefighters, public education on fire prevention, and the establishment of fire stations in underserved areas, ensuring national coverage.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for the Interior, Mr. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim Central, commended the GNFS for its proactive approach.
“I strongly believe this will add up to the already steady trajectory on which the Service has found itself in recent years,” he stated, urging all GNFS officers to support the implementation of the initiatives.
The accompanying Scheme of Service was also unveiled, designed to streamline roles and responsibilities within the Service.
It provides clarity, promotes fairness, and ensures transparency in career development.
By rewarding merit and upholding high ethical standards, the Scheme fosters a culture of professionalism and excellence.
Chief Fire Officer Julius Aalebkure Kuunuor highlighted the importance of the initiatives, emphasizing that they align with Ghana’s broader national development goals.
“The complexities of modern emergencies demand that the Service evolve and adapt. The strategic plan represents our proactive approach to creating a safer Ghana,” he stated.
In addition to launching the Strategic Plan, the GNFS received a Presidential Honour for Distinguished Service from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during a special National Honours and Awards ceremony on December 31, 2024.
The award recognizes the GNFS’s outstanding contributions to public safety, national security, and fire management.
Chief Fire Officer Kuunuor, who received the award on behalf of the Service, was praised for his visionary leadership, which has propelled the GNFS toward modernization and enhanced efficiency.
The GNFS also received a Presidential Plaque, symbolizing the government’s appreciation for its consistent dedication to safeguarding lives and properties.
President Akufo-Addo lauded the GNFS’s unwavering commitment to excellence, urging the Service to maintain its exemplary performance.
He noted that the ceremony served to address omissions from the main National Honours and Awards event held earlier at the Accra International Conference Center.
Other distinguished honorees included the Ghana Tourism Authority and Lawyer Kow Essuman, both recognized for their exceptional contributions to the nation.
The dual milestones of unveiling the Strategic Plan and receiving the Presidential Honour mark a new chapter for the GNFS, one defined by professionalism, innovation, and dedication.
With a clear vision for the future and the government’s support, the GNFS is poised to elevate fire safety standards and contribute significantly to national development.
