The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng [A Plus], has issued an ultimatum to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding the murder investigation of journalist Ahmed Suale.
Speaking on the matter, the MP expressed concern over what he perceives as a lack of progress in the case.
In a statement released on Facebook on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Mr. Asare-Obeng revealed that he was invited to the CID headquarters last year [2024] to provide information about the murder.
During the meeting, he identified a former high-ranking government minister as a key suspect in the case, allegedly linked to contracting the assailants responsible for Suale’s death.
The MP stated that he disclosed this information, including the identity of his credible source, in the presence of the CID director.
“The CID director must update the public on the progress of this investigation and explain why additional time may be required to resolve it,” Mr. Asare-Obeng said. “At this point, it appears the matter has been sidelined.”
The MP has given the CID a 48-hour deadline to provide a public update. Should the department fail to comply, he plans to invoke his authority as a Member of Parliament to summon the Ghana Police Service to brief Parliament.
Additionally, Mr. Asare-Obeng has threatened to disclose further details, including the name of the alleged perpetrator, through his social media platforms.
Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist with Tiger Eye PI, was shot and killed in Accra in January 2019. His death sparked outrage, with calls for justice from both local and international stakeholders.
The CID is yet to respond to the MP’s statement.
