Mr. Benjamin Aryee, Advisor on Mines to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has called for a united public effort to combat illegal mining, stressing that achieving the full value of Ghana’s mineral resources depends on addressing the challenges of responsible mineral sourcing.

Speaking at the 2024 Gold Statement and Exhibition Conference, Mr. Aryee noted that while the government has made strides in promoting value addition in the mining sector, these gains risk being undermined if illegal mining is not tackled collectively.

“Value addition is essential, but we must address responsible sourcing, which is rooted in responsible mining. The government must lead this effort, but it cannot succeed alone. Every Ghanaian has a role to play,” he said.

Mr. Aryee highlighted the small-scale mining sector as a significant contributor to illegal mining, explaining that it was originally designed to balance regulation and livelihoods. However, he acknowledged the need for stricter oversight to ensure responsible practices.

“Small-scale mining was intended to support livelihoods, but it must be done responsibly. Ghanaians must take civic responsibility in their local communities to support the fight against illegal mining,” he added.

He also identified key challenges in the mining sector, including inadequate technology, lack of funding, and limited research and development. “Without appropriate technology, even abundant resources cannot be effectively utilized. Academia must produce research that directly benefits industry,” he stated.

The advisor further stressed the importance of collaboration among industry players to overcome challenges and improve access to markets, noting that isolation hampers progress. “Ghanaians must move beyond working in silos. Collaboration is essential for success,” he said.

The conference, themed “Promoting Ghana Gold Jewellery with Special Emphasis on Lapidary and Gemstones of Ghana – A New Dimension,” brought together stakeholders to explore ways to enhance the sector’s growth and visibility.

Mr. Aryee encouraged participants to use such forums to foster cooperation and innovation, ensuring Ghana’s mining sector achieves its full potential while safeguarding its sustainability.
