Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the government to intervene in the affairs of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), even if doing so will attract sanctions from FIFA.
This comes after SaveGhanaFootball convenors on Wednesday, February 14, presented a petition to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif in parliament, after a peaceful protest to register their displeasure with how football is run and the current state of our national teams in the country.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh indicated that it is time for the government to take critical action in football.
“Let’s all accept it and we must be humble enough to accept that there is something wrong with the running of our senior national team, the Black Stars. I hear all the statements about reforms…it cannot just be any reform at all. Yes, i agree there should be some reform but we must be specific on what we want to do.
“Mr. Speaker, i dare say that even if we have to interfere to attract the sanction of FIFA, we must do it to safeguard the sports,’ he said.
He bemoaned that the current administration of the GFA is ruining the brand of Black Stars.
“When you travel outside the country, and once you say you are a Ghanaian, the first thing anybody tells you is to mention one popular footballer or the other and the football which is a brand is being destroyed whether intentionally or untentionally and it will not happen in this time of ours that we’ll sit down aloof and allow things to run down. Me must safeguard the situation.”
