The Government of Ghana has unveiled a new visa policy that significantly reduces the processing time for visa applications to a maximum of five working days, down from the previous four to six weeks. The move is part of a broader strategy to position Ghana as a top-tier destination for tourism, business, and foreign investment on the African continent.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the new directive on Monday, stating that it takes immediate effect across all Ghanaian diplomatic missions.
“We have retooled our consular operations globally to ensure prompt visa issuance. This new policy is part of a wider effort to make Ghana more accessible and competitive internationally,” the Minister noted in a statement shared via the Ministry’s official social media platforms.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, digital systems and logistical improvements have already been rolled out at Ghana’s embassies and consulates worldwide to support the swift implementation of the policy. These measures aim to eliminate long-standing bottlenecks in the application process and create a more investor- and visitor-friendly environment.
The announcement aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s January 7, 2025, inaugural declaration that “Ghana is open for business.” The new visa regime gives tangible meaning to that pledge by removing procedural delays that have previously deterred potential travelers and business partners.
“As Foreign Minister, my mandate is to cut through the bureaucracy and create pathways that invite the world to engage with Ghana—whether for tourism, investment, or reunification with the diaspora,” Mr. Ablakwa emphasized.
However, the Ministry was quick to clarify that faster processing does not guarantee automatic approval. Visa applications will be reviewed and decisions issued within the five-day window, but eligibility requirements must still be met.
“This is not a blanket approval system. It means that applicants will receive a decision—approval or otherwise—within five working days,” the Ministry explained.
The expedited visa policy is expected to stimulate economic growth by enhancing international mobility, boosting tourism revenue, encouraging trade, and deepening diaspora engagement.
“Ghana is not just open—we are ready. Come and experience the Black Star spirit,” the Minister concluded.
