The government has announced plans to revitalise Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and Intercity STC Coaches Limited as part of measures to improve public transport safety and efficiency.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe acknowledged the financial challenges facing the two state-owned transport companies but assured that steps are being taken to modernise their fleet and infrastructure.
According to him, government will procure 350 Toyota Hiace buses, 100 coastal buses, and 50 trucks to support MMTL operations.
The vehicles are expected to be delivered in phases between the end of 2025 and early 2026.
“The government is committed to revitalising Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, which are currently in distress and need urgent financial support. We plan to modernise their fleet and upgrade existing infrastructure for efficient service delivery,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
He further disclosed that arrangements are underway to modernise STC’s intercity fleet, including the phased introduction of electronic buses to boost sustainability and efficiency.
The Minister added that the revamp is intended to restore public confidence in state-run transport systems, which have faced setbacks in recent years due to inadequate funding, ageing fleets, and rising operational costs.
