The Government of Ghana has unveiled renewed measures to combat illegal mining, with a strong focus on protecting the country’s waterbodies and forest reserves.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the intervention while presenting to Parliament on Wednesday, February 25, stating that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) will lead a nationwide cleanup of polluted rivers and other affected water sources within designated mining zones.

He explained that the operation forms part of broader efforts to restore degraded environments and curb the destructive impact of galamsey activities.

Dr. Forson also disclosed that the National Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small-Scale Mining (NAIMOS) will step up its enforcement operations, targeting illegal miners operating in rivers, streams, and protected forest areas.

According to him, the intensified crackdown and cleanup campaign are aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and strengthening the fight against illegal mining nationwide.
