The Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery, and the Oti Regional Security Council Executive Instrument have imposed a curfew on Nkwanta Township in the Oti Region from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

In a press release dated November 21, 2023, the ministry reiterated that the sanction is a mechanism to resolve conflicts and disputes happening in the township.

The Oti Regional Minister, Joshua Mukubu has said that two more people have been confirmed dead in the Nkwanta shooting on Tuesday.

This brings the number of deaths to eight so far after a fresh shooting incident at Nkwanta South, where armed assailants opened fire on residents at the Nkwanta Central Market early Tuesday morning.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on Tuesday, November 21, he said “When we spoke in the afternoon, the number was six but this evening, my police commander after going round to convey the bodies said the number stands at eight.”

“Meanwhile, the Government would like to reiterate that, there is a ban on all persons in Nkwanta Township and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” The release stated.
