The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has announced the release of Two Hundred and Sixty-Five Million, Two Hundred and Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵265,220,000.00) for the disbursement of cash grants to vulnerable households under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry’s conference room on March 21, 2025, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey indicated that allocation covers the 94th and 95th cycles of payments, scheduled for the last week of March 2025.
She noted that the funds will be distributed to 350,000 beneficiary households across 260 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies through the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlements System (GHIPSS) via the GATE system. The payment covers two cycles: November-December 2024 and January-February 2025.
According to the Minister, cash grants are provided to extremely poor households with vulnerable members, including orphans, the elderly (65 years and above) without support, persons with severe disabilities who are unable to work, and pregnant or lactating mothers with infants under one year.
Giving details regarding the eligibility of the household members, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey emphasised that the payment amounts vary based on the number of eligible household members.
She said under the joint disbursement; Households with one eligible member will receive GH₵ 512, Households with two eligible members will receive GH₵ 608, Households with three eligible members will receive GH₵ 704 and Households with four or more eligible members will receive GH₵ 848 respectively.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection urged beneficiary households to use the funds to improve household nutrition, children’s education, and income-generating activities.
She further added that the Ministry is also conducting a reassessment of all beneficiary households to ensure continued eligibility and make room for new entrants.
Teh Minister also disclosed that the government has increased LEAP funding from GH₵ 728.8 million to GH₵ 953.5 million for the 2025 financial year, with plans to expand the program’s coverage from 350,000 to 400,000 households.
Meeting the SDG 1
As part of its objective to reduce poverty in line with Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1), the Minister said her sector has outlined essential plans and strategies to help vulnerable household members become self-sufficient.
The Minister acknowledged the support of key partners, including UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, and called for continued collaboration to strengthen the program.
