The Government of Ghana has introduced the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill to Parliament, proposing a new tax of 1 cedi on all petroleum products as part of efforts to address the country’s persistent energy challenges.

The announcement was made on the floor of Parliament by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who emphasized the urgency of raising funds to support energy sector reforms and stabilize power supply.

According to Ayariga, the proposed amendment is aimed at generating sustainable funding to tackle debts in the energy sector and invest in critical infrastructure.

He acknowledged the public’s likely concerns over the additional cost burden but argued that the move is necessary to prevent further deterioration in electricity service delivery.

“This is not a popular decision, but it is a necessary one,” Ayariga stated. “If we want reliable power and progress in our energy sector, we must be willing to make some sacrifices.”

The bill is expected to be debated in the coming days, with lawmakers on both sides of the House already signaling varied positions on the proposal.

If passed, the new levy will add GHS1.00 to the price of every litre of petrol and diesel sold at the pump.
