The Government of Ghana has unveiled plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to boost the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and strengthen the country’s public transport network.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, as part of the government’s broader public transport revitalisation and economic transformation agenda.

According to Mr. Nikpe, the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive early next year, signalling the beginning of the rollout.

Currently, MMTL operates with just 134 functional buses nationwide, a situation that has hindered its ability to sustain operations, expand routes, and meet growing passenger demand.

Responding to questions from Members of Parliament, the minister stated that the procurement forms part of a wider initiative to modernise transport terminals, improve service quality, and create employment opportunities within the sector.

“Mr. Speaker, the company is in the process of acquiring about 500 new buses over a short to long term to augment its operations. These buses will be deployed across the country to optimise existing routes and introduce new ones in underserved areas,” he explained.

Mr. Nikpe also revealed that Metro Mass Transit is taking steps to support the government’s proposed 24-hour economy, beginning with its vehicle maintenance department and traffic unit to ensure continuous service and operational efficiency.
