The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced plans for a partnership between the government and TikTok aimed at empowering Ghanaian content creators to monetise their content and engage more responsibly on the platform.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series press briefing on Friday, August 1, the Minister revealed that discussions with TikTok’s West Africa Government Relations team were held on June 26 to explore areas of collaboration in support of Ghana’s growing digital creative economy.
He stressed the need for digital platforms to offer fair treatment to local creators.
He disclosed that he had urged TikTok to ensure equitable monetisation opportunities and the establishment of a local content moderation agency to align with Ghana’s cultural and regulatory landscape.
The government-TikTok partnership, he believes, will open new opportunities for Ghanaian creators, enhance digital accountability, and contribute to a more inclusive and economically rewarding online ecosystem.
“As part of efforts to promote a safe, vibrant, and inclusive digital creative economy, I met with TikTok’s West Africa Government Relations team on 26th June. Our discussions focused on enforcing age restrictions, safeguarding minors, and promoting responsible content development.
“I urged TikTok to ensure fair compensation for Ghanaian content creators. I also proposed the establishment of a local moderation and content governance team to reflect Ghana’s values, protect user rights, and support national regulatory expectations,” he stated.
