Government has allocated some GH¢8bn to provide relief and some mitigative measures for farmers affected by the dry spell.

The Northern region has been without rain for over two months causing severe drought.

This sparked widespread concerns about food security and calls for measures to mitigate the situation.

The Minister for Finance Dr. Amin Adam at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, August 26, 2024, disclosed that the government has come through with financial support to farmers.

According to the minister, the package includes cash transfers and a supply of food and other relief items to affected farmers.

He explained that 2.5 billion out of the 8 billion will be drawn from the contingency fund and 2.4 billion Cedis as support from development partners.

He noted that the support from the World Bank will be used for cash transfers and supply of inputs.

“Our response may not entirely neutralise the extent of the problem. But our response certainly will help in stabilising the situation until we get out of the crisis”.

On his part, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong also noted that there has been a temporary ban on grain export.

He added that the government will also provide financial support of GH¢ 1,000 per hectare to vulnerable farmers as partial cover for their investment losses.
