The Minister-Designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured that first-year tertiary students who have already paid their admission fees will be fully refunded.
Mr. Iddrisu made this disclosure on Monday, January 20, 2025, during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
The decision, according to him, forms part of the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on students and their families while promoting equitable access to higher education.
“The refund policy is aimed at ensuring that no student is disadvantaged due to financial challenges. This is in line with our broader vision of making education affordable and accessible to all,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
While specific timelines for the refunds were not disclosed, the minister-designate assured that all eligible students would receive their refunds in a timely and transparent manner.
This announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with many praising the initiative as a progressive step to support students.
However, some stakeholders have raised concerns about the practical implementation of the policy, urging the government to clarify the process and timelines for disbursement.
Mr. Iddrisu’s confirmation as Education Minister is still pending approval by Parliament. If confirmed, he is expected to oversee the rollout of this refund policy alongside other educational reforms.
