The Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) has announced it will begin removing destroyed toll booths on the Accra-Tema motorway as the abandoned booths have resulted in several deaths on the stretch.
According to the authority it has conducted an assessment and decided to remove the toll booths situated in the inner lanes while the booths outside the main two lane, will not be touched.
The move to leave the outer booths are part of the expected extension project.
Confirming the new development in an interview on Citi News, the Director of Road Safety and Environment at the GHA, Joseph Atsu Amedzake, said his outfit is set to clear obstacles on the original motorway.
“What we want to do now is to clear all obstacles on the way of the original motorway. So now, we want to limit traffic flow to the original motorway section so that any obstacles, including the toll booths, in the way of the motorway road section are removed.”
“So that when you are coming from Accra, you will not pass through where the vehicles are currently passing. You will go through the concrete section.”
The demolishing exercise, estimated at GH¢1 million, is however expected to start today Friday September 8, 2023 with all the concrete slabs on which the tollbooths were sitting also expected to be pulled down.
In November 2021, the Ministry of Roads and Highways directed the immediate the seizure of the collection of tolls on all public roads and bridges across the country.
This was initially a welcoming idea to motorists as they claimed monies made from the toll were not used for the right purpose.
But after two years, motorists are calling on authorities to either bring back the collection of tolls as they think drivers would reduce their speed when they get to the booths in order to reduce crashes and lost of lives.
