Karela United earned valuable three points against Kotoko in their game week 20 in the Ghana Premier League on Friday at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex in Nalerigu.
It was a big miss on the top spot for the Porcupine Warriors as league leaders FC Samartex also stumbled to a 1-0 defeat to Bechem United.
The home side could have opened the scoring with a very close opportunity but Solomon Aboagye narrowly missed the chance.
With just four minutes to the end of the first half, Karela goalkeeper Abdul Ganiu made a fine save to stop Rocky Dwamena from giving Kotoko the lead, ending the first in goalless.
After the break, the host took the lead in the 59th minute with a beautiful goal from Ibrahim Giyas, who was left unmarked in the Kotoko 18-yard box, to nod in a fine delivery into the box.
Karela endured waves of attack from Kotoko after going up but goalkeeper Ganiu’s man of the match performance ensured that they picked all three points.
The results means Kotoko has just won only one of their last three games and now sit third in the league table with just three points behind FC Samartex.
At Bechem, Samartex failed to extend their lead on top of the table, as they lost narrowly to Bechem United.
Joseph Kinful’s early strike was the only goal of the game, as Samartex recorded two straight losses in a row.
