The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued an unqualified apology to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following recent media attacks directed at him.

The apology stems from the August 17, 2025, incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department, where individuals seeking medical care allegedly assaulted nurses and staff.

The incident, which sparked public outcry after video footage went viral, prompted the Association’s leadership to meet the Minister on September 3 to apologise for how the aftermath was handled and to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration between nurses and the government.

Mr. Akandoh accepted the apology and urged the GRNMA to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement with the government.

He highlighted measures being taken by the government to improve healthcare delivery, including the integration of 13,500 nurses onto the payroll, establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund, retooling of health facilities, and settlement of arrears on nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance claims.

The Minister also cited government’s decision to absorb half of admission fees for nursing training institutions, reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the collective bargaining agreement, and pledged support for reforms towards Universal Health Coverage.

At the meeting, attended by past and present leaders of the GRNMA including Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, Dr. Krobea Asante, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, the Association raised several concerns affecting healthcare professionals and called for urgent attention.

Meanwhile, evidence submitted to the Ridge Assault Investigative Committee showed a verbal altercation involving Mr. Ralph St. Williams, some riders, and hospital staff, but no confirmation of a physical attack.

The alleged victim, Ms. Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a rotation nurse, reported pain in her left hand the following day; medical records confirmed no fractures or dislocations, and she was treated with pain relief and psychological support.
