The Western Region Network of Ministers, Churches, and Councils has criticized the government for reluctantly dealing with LGBT issues in the country.
The group expressed worry that after closely observing the government, they realized that it was unwilling to heed requests from Ghanaians for regulations that would make it harder for people to engage in LGBT activities.
In a news conference held on Friday at the Bethel Methodist Church in Takoradi, they issued a warning that Christians around the nation will not put up with the government’s reticent attitude.
“We have closely monitored the posture of government and feel its mask of cosmetism. The government’s feet-dragging manoeuvres will not be countenanced and endorsed by the over seventy percent Christian population in our country.
“We need to strengthen Ghana’s legal jurisprudence and existing legislation to make it stricter and more deterrent for offenders, and at the same time, protective and restorative for victims.”
They also urged the government to openly condemn the act to reassure Ghanaians of their commitment to tackling the problem.
“We therefore suggest that all arms of government, the executive, the legislature and the judiciary as a matter of urgency, come out to overtly condemn LGBTQ+ activities with a consented voice and assure the masses of their commitment to tackle the problem head-on.”
