A group of prominent Ghanaians, led by former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has submitted a petition to Parliament calling for a bipartisan probe into the conduct of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in the investigation of the stash of money found in the residence of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.
The petition, which includes signatures from anti-graft campaigner Martin Kpebu, security analyst Dr.Adam Bona, academic Professor Ransford Gyampo, and over 100 other individuals from various sectors, alleges that EOCO failed to adequately investigate the former Minister for money laundering.
They argue that Cecilia Dapaah was unable to explain the source of the significant amount of money seized at her residence by the Special Prosecutor.
According to the petition submitted on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the group criticized EOCO for not prioritizing the
source of the money as a key aspect of the investigation.
They also expressed concerns about EOCO’s alleged delay in seizing the money retrieved by the Special Prosecutor, which was intended to be returned to Cecilia Dapaah.
The petition further highlighted inconsistencies in EOCO’s public statements and actions during the
investigation.
This development follows a recent standoff between state anti-corruption agencies involved in probing the former Minister over the money found in her possession.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has previously accused EOCO of lacking the necessary determination to thoroughly investigate the matter, despite sharing detailed information with them.
The petition seeks to address these concerns and ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the allegations against Cecilia Dapaah.
Parliament is however expected to resume sitting today Friday May 17, 2024 after a long recess resulting in the Majority Caucus petitioning the speaker to recall the House.
