The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has caused the arrest of a director of the Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, located in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, for allegedly operating unaccredited academic programmes and an unlicensed health facility.

Dr. Ademan Tetteh, one of three directors of the institution, was picked up on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, following a joint operation by GTEC officials and officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

According to GTEC, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on tertiary institutions flouting accreditation laws. The team met Dr. Tetteh on campus, but the two other directors — Daniel Tetteh Boafo and Professor Nyarkotey Obu — were not present.

After waiting in vain for the two to appear and with school authorities unable to provide any evidence of accreditation, the CID arrested Dr. Tetteh for further questioning.

The Registrar of the institution was also taken into custody. Both were transferred to the CID Headquarters in Accra for further investigations.

In the course of the operation, officials discovered that Dr. Tetteh had allegedly been using a doctorate title that was not earned through any academic qualification. When questioned, he claimed the title was honorary.

Addressing the media after the arrest, GTEC’s Director for Corporate Affairs, Jerry Sarfo, said the Commission had received repeated complaints and warnings about unaccredited operations by some institutions, necessitating direct enforcement action.

“This is something we’re doing because there have been persistent calls for people to desist from running unaccredited programmes and they keep doing it,” Mr. Sarfo stated. “There was the need for us to actually enforce compliance.”

He confirmed that GTEC had initiated an engagement with the directors and registrar on-site and would continue investigations at the police station.

Touching on the alleged misuse of academic titles, he said, “We saw documents suggesting conferment of a ‘Doctorship’ and honorary professorship.

We will need to examine these further before commenting on their legitimacy. But the core reason we’re here is the running of unaccredited academic programmes, which we strongly frown upon as a Commission.”

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
