GTEC shuts down Royal Nursing College

The Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) has closed down the Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nyhiaeso in the Ashanti Region, after management reportedly failed to provide the required documentation to confirm the institution’s accreditation status.

According to GTEC, the college lacks accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and did not comply with a directive issued in June 2024 to halt the admission of new students.

The institution, which reportedly enrols over 800 students, is said to have operated without proper registration with the relevant regulatory bodies, raising serious concerns over programme administration and academic standards.

GTEC officials conducted an inspection of the campus on Thursday, February 19. Following an hour-long assessment, they announced the immediate closure, emphasising that the measure was necessary to protect students and uphold educational regulations.

The Council indicated that arrangements would be made to transfer affected students to other accredited institutions, while special provisions are expected to allow final-year students to complete their programmes.

“The transfer and absorption of the students is not automatic. First, any student admitted in 2024 does not qualify. Secondly, the affiliation with UCC, the mentor institution, must be valid, and finally, students enrolled prior to 2024 should have been qualified.”

The closure sparked shock and distress among students, many of whom were seen crying on campus. Some lamented having recently paid their fees, expressing frustration over the sudden disruption to their studies.

However, the wife of the owner and some management members were picked up by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, who accompanied GTEC officials to the school.
