An Accra High Court has delivered a landmark verdict, acquitting and discharging Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, after a protracted three-year legal battle. Quayson faced charges of perjury, deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, and knowingly making a false declaration, all linked to allegations of dual citizenship.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh found that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to support the charges, citing inconsistencies in the evidence presented. The court determined that Quayson had initiated the process to renounce his Canadian citizenship before submitting nomination papers, making his statement about owing allegiance only to Ghana truthful and in good faith .
Mr. Quayson expressed relief and gratitude following the acquittal, describing it as a victory for justice and his constituents. “This is justice for Assin North, and justice for Ghana. This is justice for everybody,” he said, praising Justice Yanzuh for her fairness. He also maintained that the case was politically motivated, alleging attempts to convict him with “falsified documents”. Despite these challenges, Quayson remained confident, stating, “When you are not wrong, there’s nothing you should be worried about. No matter where you put the person, they will bounce back” .
With the acquittal, Mr, Quayson is now free to continue serving as MP for Assin North without further hindrance, lifting the legal cloud that had hung over his parliamentary seat. This ruling marks the end of a contentious legal saga that had garnered significant public attention and political debate
