The Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has revealed that the reconstruction of La General Hospital has been delayed due to the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
In July 2020, La General Hospital was demolished after the hospital’s administration reported severe structural issues in 2015. On August 10, 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially launched the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project.
However, during a recent press briefing in Accra, Dr. Okoe-Boye stated that the DDEP has negatively impacted the government’s plans for the project.
“Due to the debt exchange programme, many financial institutions withdrew from the arrangements amid the global financial crisis, which is why the La General project has stalled,” he explained.
“President Akufo-Addo instructed the Ministries of Health and Finance to seek alternative funding if the debt exchange would cause delays. I’m pleased to announce that construction of La General is now being funded directly by the Government of Ghana, using taxpayer money, at a cost of €50 million,” Okoe-Boye added.
