Health Minister congratulates FDA boss on appointment as African Medicines Agency Director – General

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, on her appointment as Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).

This prestigious appointment is a proud and historic moment for Ghana and the entire continent. It is a testament to Dr. Darko’s outstanding leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to strengthening public health and regulatory systems across Africa“, the minister said a short briefing in Accra.

Dr. Delese expressed her deepest appreciation to the Government of Ghana, led by H.E President John Dramani Mahama, as well as the Minister for Health and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, for their invaluable support, collaboration, and commitment to advancing Ghana’s leadership on the global stage.

The AMA was established by the African Union on November 5, 2021, and its main objective is to improve access to quality, safe, and efficacious medical products on the continent.

The AMA’s creation is intended to facilitate the regulation and oversight of key medicines at a continental level, promoting collaboration among African countries and regions.

The Agency’s mission is to provide leadership in creating an enabling regulatory environment for the pharmaceutical sector in Africa and to ensure that African people have access to essential medical products and technologies.
