The Ministry of Health has announced new measures to cushion the impact of the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which has entered its second week.

In a statement issued Tuesday, June 11, the Ministry acknowledged the disruption caused by the industrial action and said it is actively working to fill critical service gaps in health facilities.

“As a result of the ongoing strike action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), it has become imperative for the Ministry of Health to implement additional measures to mitigate any inconvenience that has been caused,” the statement said.

The Ministry stressed that it had followed “all appropriate channels” to lead negotiations for the approval and implementation of the nurses’ and midwives’ new Conditions of Service.

To ensure continuity of healthcare services, the Ministry is encouraging the public to continue seeking care at operational health centres across the country.

“In line with the Ministry’s policy to ensure a healthy population for national development, it has become necessary to make provisions to fill the gaps created as a result of the strike,” the statement added.

The Ministry also published a list of health facilities where nursing services remain available and advised the public to access care at these locations.

The statement comes as negotiations continue between the government and GRNMA leaders, following the union’s rejection of a proposed deferment of their Conditions of Service implementation to 2026.
