An articulated truck loaded with heavy B5 angle iron overturned late Sunday night, July 27, 2025, blocking both lanes of the Kintampo-Tamale highway and leaving hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded for hours with no immediate resolution in sight.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the Kintampo Waterfalls, a section notorious for steep descents and challenging road conditions. According to eyewitness accounts, the driver lost control of the trailer after the vehicle’s brakes allegedly failed while descending the hilly terrain.

“The driver tried to manage the descent, but the load was just too much. The trailer swerved and landed across the road,” said one witness who narrowly avoided the crash.

The truck, carrying an immense weight of steel angle iron, jackknifed and came to rest diagonally across the highway at Sronoase, cutting off all traffic in both directions. The result has been a chaotic and rapidly worsening situation, with travelers stuck in a traffic jam stretching for several kilometers.

As of Tuesday afternoon, July 29, emergency responders and heavy-duty recovery teams had yet to arrive on-site, leaving many drivers and passengers frustrated and with no clear timeline for when the road will reopen.

Kintampo North Municipal Chief Executive, Isaac Donkor, acknowledged the gridlock and confirmed that efforts are underway to deploy emergency personnel and the necessary equipment to the location.

“The situation is serious, and we are mobilizing resources to clear the road. The weight of the cargo makes the recovery effort more complex, but we are working with all stakeholders to restore access,” Donkor assured.

Hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded

Meanwhile, commuters traveling toward Tamale or passing through the Kintampo corridor are being urged to reroute their journeys or delay travel until clearance is complete.

Local authorities are expected to issue updates as the situation develops. The obstruction is likely to cause continued delays into the night and possibly the following day.
