Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, has officially responded to the allegations of vote buying in the party’s parliamentary primary.

In a press statement released on Monday, February 9, 2026, the legal practitioner confirmed his appearance before an investigative committee chaired by veteran party stalwart Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

The committee was tasked with probing reports of “vote-buying” that reportedly surfaced during the internal elections held last Saturday.

Mr Jamal, who was also recalled as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, maintained his innocence, stating that he used the session to “firmly deny any attempt” to induce voters.

He described the allegations as contrary to his long-standing track record within the constituency.

“I used the opportunity to reiterate my innocence,” the statement read, as the candidate sought to distance himself from the controversy that has shadowed the primary’s aftermath.

He also pointed to his history of participation in the constituency’s democratic process.

He noted that he had contested and lost two previous primaries against the late Member of Parliament for the area, accepting defeat on both occasions in the interest of “party unity and cohesion”.

He further provided the history surrounding the previous elections and the votes he garnered in the 2024 primaries—where he garnered 309 votes against the winner’s 452—as evidence of his genuine, organic growth among the party faithful.

He attributed his rising popularity to local initiatives and a commitment to better representation, rather than financial influence
