‘ I did not buy votes in Ayawaso East primary’ – Baba Jamal

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has denied allegations of vote buying in the party’s recently held parliamentary primaries in the constituency.

In a press release issued on Sunday, Mr. Jamal said his attention had been drawn to a public communication recalling him from his post as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, following claims that he engaged in vote buying during the just-ended primaries.

The statement, which cited earlier comments by the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, noted that the party leadership had condemned the allegations and called for investigations into the matter.

“I wish to state categorically that I, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, have not engaged in any vote buying or election malpractices,” he said, adding that he is prepared to cooperate fully with any investigation instituted by the party.

Mr. Jamal expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, describing the appointment as an honour.

He also thanked members of the NDC in the Ayawaso East Constituency for the confidence reposed in him, following his selection as the party’s candidate ahead of the parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.

The allegations surrounding the Ayawaso East primaries have heightened tensions within the party, with the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament earlier calling for the annulment of the primary and the disqualification of candidates found culpable of electoral misconduct.
