“I have been dehumanized” – Sir Obama Pokuase

Social media and NPP activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase, has described his recent arrest and detention as dehumanizing and an abuse of his rights.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Sir Obama recounted that although an Accra Circuit Court granted him bail of GH¢50,000 with three sureties on Wednesday, August 14, he was still kept in custody until Monday, August 18.

He claimed the delay in executing the bail was a deliberate attempt to victimize him.

He added that he was detained at the Accra Central Police Station from Wednesday through Sunday.

“I pleaded not guilty when I was taken to court, and I was granted bail in the sum of 50,000 Ghana cedis. It was about 4 PM when they informed me that the court had closed, so they couldn’t process the bail that day. As a result, I was taken back to prison. I was treated like a hardened criminal, even though I was only called in as a suspect assisting in the investigation.

“This kind of treatment was unjust. I was detained at Accra Central, and it was evident that they were using the bail process to victimize and abuse me. I was there from Wednesday to Sunday, and I was finally released today, Monday. If the court granted me bail, then why was execution of that bail a problem?” he questioned.

Police have said his arrest was linked to an intelligence-led operation into the unlawful possession and circulation of images and videos of sophisticated firearms on social media.

Sir Obama, however, insists he is “not a criminal but a mere activist” and calls for his rights to be respected.

“Today, at the CID headquarters, I was informed that a matter from 2020 had been resurrected by the complainant. I am not a violent or dangerous person; I am only an activist. You may not agree with my activism, but that does not give anyone the right to intimidate me. I am a responsible citizen of this land, and my rights need to be protected.”
