The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO has apologized for comparing Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to President Akufo-Addo.

His apology comes days after his official unveiling in Kumasi, where he claimed that no President in Ghana’s history including former President Nkrumah had performed better than President Akufo-Addo.

This comment faced public scrutiny with netizens demanding apology and retraction.

However in a statement dated July 12, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh clarified that he did not intend to denigrate former President Kwame Nkrumah or any other leader.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had.”

“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor.”

“I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he explained.
