Member of Parliament for Suame and former Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has revealed that, he formally resigned from his role as leader of the Majority Caucus in order to facilitate peace and unity in the party.
On Wednesday February 21, 2024, the Suame lawmaker, announced his resignation after leadership of the party, the Majority Caucus and the President met to deliberate on the desire to have a new person as the leader of the Majority side in Parliament.
Subsequently, the National Council on Friday February 23, officially announced Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Majority leader and proceeded to Parliament to inform the Speaker.
On the floor of Parliament, the former Majority Leader said “Mr. Speaker the decision that I made was not within the presence of Parliament. This morning, I summoned a caucus meeting to formally announce to my colleagues that I have elected voluntarily to step down as leader of the Majority caucus of the House”.
Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu further noted that, following the President’s reshuffle, concerns were raised as to whether there should be a change to the leadership of the party in Parliament that is the Majority Caucus.
“The discussions had the potential to degenerate into consequences which the end result could be rather fatal to the party in their efforts to breaking the 8”.
“Mr. Speaker, it was amidst the discussions at a meeting with the caucus that the President had requested, I tended my resignation as majority leader in order to still the storm and facilitate peace and unity required for the party at this time”, he said.
The former Majority leader therefore used the opportunity to thank members for support over the years and urged members to give same support to the new leader.
“Mr. Speaker, Let me take the opportunity to thank you for the cooperation and collaboration that existed between me and you over the entire period that our paths crossed here in Parliament and we have worked together to uplift the status of the Ghanaian Parliament in many endeavors and more especially litany since you assumed the position of the Speaker of Parliament. Let me not only thank my caucus but the entire membership, officers, and men of this House who have all played their part to ensure that we rose high the flag of Ghana.”
Following his resignation, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will assume the role of chairman of the NPP’s manifesto committee.
