Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has indicated that he only wants to be a part of a team that is ready to make their country proud.
The 65-year-old said this during his post-match press conference in Kumasi on Monday, following his team’s goalless draw against Namibia in a friendly match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
When asked what his goals were for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, he replied that despite high expectations from Ghanaians, he believes the team would perform better than it did in the previous competition.
“I want to say that I sincerely hope we do better than we did in the last tournament. I think when you ask coaches these questions, they are hesitant to give real targets because we know expectations are high. I want to be the head coach of a team that makes the country proud in this tournament,” he said.
He continued by saying that though they want to win the tournament, that will depend on their performance.
“How far we can go will depend on the performances that we can put in and one thing I know is that there is a group of players that desperately want to do well and if you have a group of players who desperately want to do well, you never know what can happen and I don’t think any of us surely don’t want to be the head coach of a team that doesn’t think they have any chance of winning it. I think that has to be the mentality going into the tournament but we know that we have to play well and be optimistic that we can do well,” he added.
The competition will kick off on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
