The Presidency’s Senior Presidential Advisor, Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo, has called on Ghanaians to settle their differences and as a united people to fight the threats of terrorism in the country.
The fight against the increasing threat of terrorism in the country can only be won if all Ghanaians pull together and actively support the security authorities in this direction.
Mr Osafo Maafo made the call yesterday at the official launch of the Department of National Security’s ‘if you see anything, say anything’ program in Accra.
The campaign was part of the government’s broader anti-terrorist activities.
The aim was to raise citizens’ awareness and vigilance on violent extremism and terrorism.
Mr Osafo said that for the first time in the country’s history there was a serious risk that a terrorist attack could originate from the sub-region.
Additionally he noted that, Ghana is a peaceful and stable nation despite its location in a volatile sub-region.
He said, “This is illustrated by the fact of the result of the second edition of the Global Peace Index, which ranks 163 independent countries according to their level of peacefulness, with Ghana ranking first in West Africa, second in Africa and 38th in the world .”
The senior adviser said the country has consistently ranked among the top three most peaceful countries in Africa according to the Peace Index score for the past five years, underpinning its status as a beacon of democracy and a haven of peace on the continent.
“This is a status that cannot and should not be taken for granted,” he emphasized.
The National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah said Ghana’s proximity to the sea and its rich mineral resources have made it a target for terrorists.
He noted that the launch of the campaign marked a turning point in the relationship between security agencies and citizens.
The minister urged the public to take the campaign as a clarion call to citizens to do their part to protect the country’s security.
As part of the campaign, the public can reach security agencies via toll-free 999 and all of their social media addresses.
