The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the family of the late Ghanaian music icon, Charles Kojo Ofosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, of full security support during the one-week observance of his passing.
The memorial event is scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Complex in Accra, where thousands of fans, public figures, and well-wishers are expected to gather in honour of the legendary highlife musician.
As part of preparations and tradition, Dr. Yohuno, accompanied by members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), paid a visit to the bereaved family and the funeral planning committee to formally extend condolences and receive updates on funeral arrangements.
During the visit, the IGP shared a personal reflection on Daddy Lumba’s influence, describing the late musician as a cultural treasure whose songs shaped generations.
He fondly recalled how performances of the hit song “Yentie Obiaa” by the Police Band often move him to offer spontaneous donations, citing the timeless appeal and energy of the music.
The Ghana Police Service’s commitment to securing the event follows the overwhelming turnout during a night vigil held on August 3, where large crowds gathered in a peaceful atmosphere to celebrate the life and legacy of the music legend.
In a show of solidarity, the IGP and the POMAB team presented 25 packs of bottled water and a monetary donation to support the family in their preparations. The specific amount was not disclosed.
Collins Owusu Amankwah, Vice Chairman of the funeral committee, welcomed the gesture with appreciation, acknowledging the Police Service’s role in ensuring a dignified and secure observance.
He added that the committee would pay a reciprocal visit to the Police leadership in the coming days to discuss logistical and operational details for the upcoming ceremony.
The one-week observance is expected to draw people from all walks of life, as fans prepare to pay tribute to one of Ghana’s most celebrated and enduring musical talents.
