The Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, has denied allegations suggesting that the actions of the IGP will make a particular political party win elections.
COP George Alex Mensah, one of the three police officers whose voice was recorded in a conversation with former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has been making damning allegations against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, labelling him as a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and would prevent the New Patriotic Party from “breaking the 8”.
Appearing before the 7-member ad hoc committee probing the alleged plot to oust the IGP, Mr. Dampare stated that “it takes the people of the country to determine who becomes their leader and not him, the IGP”.
Emphasizing the role he plays as the head of the police service, and answering whether he is the most powerful person to determine the outcome of elections, IGP Dampare noted that “the most important thing is this, elections involve so many stakeholders and each one as its role whereas the police has its roles”.
He added that no institution has some sort of supremacy in terms of elections and all institutions have critical roles they play.
“Honourable Chair, that is exactly what it is and not what I am saying. Everybody has a role, every stakeholder has a role and then when we all play our roles, the people who have to vote will then determine who have to be the leaders”, he stressed.
The IGP is appearing before the committee probing the leaked tape to answer to some allegations made against him and his position as the IGP.
