The Accra Metropolitan University (AMU) has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in recognition of his nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the nation and commitment to public security, peace, and justice.

At a colourful and well-attended graduation ceremony in Accra, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of AMU, Mr. Gorski Alarbi, presented a moving citation that traced the IGP’s journey from modest beginnings in Nungua to the highest office within the Ghana Police Service.

“Today, we are not only celebrating academic excellence but also honouring a life devoted to safeguarding the fundamental pillars of any free society — law, order, and justice,” Mr. Alarbi said.

Born on Ga-Dangme soil in Nungua, Mr. Yohuno joined the Ghana Police Service in 1985 as a young recruit. By the following year, he had graduated top of his class from the Police Training School in Winneba. Since then, his career has been marked by progressive leadership in both domestic and international security.

He has served in key positions including Accra Regional Police Commander, Director General of Operations, Special Duties, Administration, and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department.

Notably, he was the first to head the Police Intelligence Directorate when it was established — a role that marked a turning point in the modernization of police investigations in Ghana.

In March 2025, Mr. Yohuno was appointed Inspector General of Police, a position he currently holds. His tenure so far has been noted for strategic reforms, renewed focus on discipline within the service, and enhanced operational coordination across the country.

The citation also highlighted his international service record, having contributed to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as East Timor.

His work in these missions included the development of intelligence frameworks and support for peace enforcement efforts, gaining him international acclaim.

Throughout his career, Mr. Yohuno has been recognized with numerous awards and service medals, including the Grand Medal in 2011 for exceptional contributions to the fight against violent crime and armed robbery.

Academically, the IGP’s record is equally impressive. He is an alumnus of West Africa Secondary School and Okwapiman Secondary School, and later pursued tertiary education at the Institute of Professional Studies (now the University of Professional Studies, Accra).

He further earned an Executive Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana Business School.

Mr. Alarbi praised the IGP for combining academic excellence with effective public service, noting that his leadership has helped build a more professional and people-centered police force in Ghana.

“His commitment to law enforcement is not only practical but intellectual. He exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, wisdom, and integrity in service of national interest,” the citation stated.

The honorary doctorate was conferred with applause from the audience, which included traditional leaders, security personnel, academia, students, and dignitaries.

The event formed part of AMU’s larger vision of recognising national icons whose lives of service inspire the youth, strengthen institutions, and contribute to national development.
