Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured Ghana’s business community of the police force’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the upcoming elections.
Speaking to private sector leaders, Dr. Dampare acknowledged the collective role of Ghanaians in ensuring national stability and reaffirmed the police’s resolve to build on past successes to safeguard the country’s democratic process.
Outlining a long-term security plan, the IGP said election security is being embedded within the broader national framework to ensure stability for the next three decades. As part of efforts to enhance public engagement, he introduced a 24/7 toll-free number, 0800-311-311, to enable citizens to report security concerns promptly.
Dr. Dampare also encouraged business leaders to remain confident in the country’s stability, assuring them that their investments would be protected.
Additionally, the IGP announced the establishment of a press center to provide timely updates and counter misinformation during the election period. This initiative aims to reinforce transparent communication and build trust in the security apparatus.
“These measures reflect our commitment to ensuring a secure environment for all Ghanaians, including businesses, as we approach this crucial period in our democracy,” he said.
The IGP’s reassurances come as part of the police force’s broader efforts to promote confidence and stability across the nation.
Collaborative Efforts for Peaceful Elections
The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi, also addressed the business community, reiterating the commitment of all security agencies to ensuring a peaceful election.
He urged political leaders to discourage unrest and stressed the importance of national unity, regardless of the election outcome.
Mr. Takyi emphasized the critical link between peace and national development, calling on businesses to advocate for calm within their networks.
The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, highlighted the role of discipline and self-restraint in maintaining security, urging businesses to leverage their influence to promote peace and stability.
He reminded the business sector of their responsibility to foster law and order, ensuring that the election proceeds peacefully.
Private Sector’s Role in Ensuring Election Stability
Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), praised the National Election Security Task Force for engaging the private sector in election preparations.
He emphasized that a stable democracy is essential for a thriving business environment and expressed the AGI’s commitment to supporting security efforts, including reporting disturbances and encouraging responsible voting.
Electoral Commission’s Commitment to Fair Elections
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the Electoral Commission, reiterated the EC’s dedication to conducting free and fair elections.
He urged stakeholders to familiarize themselves with electoral laws to prevent misinformation and ensure trust in the process.
Dr. Quaicoe also emphasized the importance of voter participation, media impartiality, and civil society education in maintaining election integrity.
