The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has declared an all-out war on illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” warning that the practice poses a grave threat to national security and the environment.
Speaking at the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference today at the Police Headquarters Conference hall , COP Yohuno addressed the escalating crisis, particularly in the Western North region, where illegal mining activities have fueled violence and lawlessness.
He revealed that armed criminals linked to these operations have launched brutal attacks on innocent civilians, including forest guards, in a bid to protect their illicit activities.
“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue,” COP Yohuno stated firmly.
He underscored the urgent need for action, citing the environmental devastation and growing insecurity caused by illegal mining.
The IGP urged Regional Commanders to intensify their efforts and adopt a more coordinated approach to curb the menace.
“We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every Regional Commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he concluded.
COP Yohuno’s declaration signals a renewed push by law enforcement to combat galamsey and restore order in affected communities.
