The Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare, on Monday, April 17, 2023 met with the leadership of the two biggest political parties; the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over recent happenings between the two parties
The meeting which the Inspector-General of Police saw the need to involve the two parties was on the back of calls from both parties to the IGP to arrest certain individuals over some foul comments.
The call for the arrests started from the NDC when lawyers of the party petitioned the Police Service to arrest the Minister for Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong for claiming that the NPP will never hand over power to the NDC.
The NPP who would not let their biggest rivals bully them also called for the arrest of former President John Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketia over same foul comments they made in the past.
In dealing with the issue, a statement released by the Police Service indicated that, a meeting was held with the two parties and both were given the opportunity to air their grievances for possible solutions to be reached.
The parties were then briefed on two strategic interventions introduced by the Police Administration to handle election and politically related incidents as part of the Police transformation agenda.
Again, the Police used the opportunity to provide an update on the status of political violence and related incidents recorded during the recent internal elections of both parties including;
the arrest and prosecution of some 14 members of the NPP for disturbances during their constituency election at Enchi and the arrest of nine (9) out of the 16 wanted individuals for disturbances at the national youth and women organizer polls of the NDC at Cape Coast.
