Lawyer of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kwame Gyan, has raised objections to the presence of the two key witnesses in the IGP leaked tape, which sought to remove him from office during their appearance before the committee on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
These matters came up when Mr. George Akuffo-Dampare was making his first appearance before the 7-member ad-hoc committee tasked to investigate the issue.
According to Kwame Gyan, the presence of the two, COP Alex Mensah, and Superintendent George Asare, was unfair and also unconstitutional.
“Honorable members, we have a couple of preliminary issues to raise before the proceedings would continue if it has to. Our first issue has to do with the presence in this room at this time, of the witnesses who previously were invited by this august committee, and who have gone through the process of giving their testimonies.
“We were given written notice on Friday to appear before this committee and the notice said we should note that all other witnesses who have attended the committee will be present, and the meeting will be held in-camera. So our first objection has to do with the presence of the other witnesses,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta AKyea, overruled their objection and insisted that their presence would not affect the testimony of the IGP.
“I don’t see why it should be a challenge for the witnesses to be here. They have said a lot of things against you, and they should sit in. They are not going to say one word, neither will their lawyers ask the IGP any question,” he stated.
