The ad hoc committee probing the leaked tape on the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is considering allowing witnesses to cross-examine themselves as they appear before the Samuel Atta Akyea-led committee on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.
Samuel Atta Akyea, chairman of the committee, mentioned after Tuesday’s sitting that witnesses and their lawyers who previously appeared before the committee must appear on Wednesday.
Information reaching myrepubliconline.com suggests that the committee inviting witnesses and the Minister of National Security could give them the opportunity to cross-examine themselves that is if the witnesses have questions to ask each other, they could be allowed to.
On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, denied allegations levelled against him, stressing that he has the police service and the country at heart and is willing to give his best as the Inspector General of Police.
Background
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin tasked the seven-member committee to probe the leaked audio recording plotting to remove the IGP.
The conversation on the recording suggests that the current Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo if not changed could prevent the ruling New Patriotic Party to “break the 8”
The Minority MPs protested vehemently against the alleged plot, and called for a forensic probe to fish out those engaged in the unhealthy conversation so they may face the law.
MPs on the Majority side however doubted the authenticity of the recording and have also denied any association with or desire to rig any election, saying the NPP will win the 2024 polls cleanly.
The committee began sitting in August as directed by the Speaker of Parliament and sitting will continue till the committee is satisfied with the outcomes of the probing
